High resolution land motion for CO2 storage monitoring

Duration
12 months

Prime Contractor
InfoTerra gmbH (Germany)

Partners
TUV SUD Industrie Service GmbH (Germany)

Users
E.ON Gas Storage GmbH (Germany)

Main Aims / Objectives
Assess the performances of DInSAR/PSI-based CO2 storage site monitoring in the implementation of the EU-directive for underground CCS operation.

Main Services

Land surface motion histories, with a focus on the injection phase, which creates surface displacement.

EO SAR data from TerraSAR-X processed with the persistent scatterer (PSI) technique and complemented with the installation of corner reflectors in the field. It is expected that TerraSAR-X brings a number of new advantages, in particular higher spatial and temporal sampling of the surface displacement signal.

PSI based monitoring focuses on a natural gas storage site of the user due to lack of operational CO2 storage sites in Europe. This activity will yield important experiences for the monitoring of future CO2 storage sites to be operated under Central European conditions. In parallel, one CO2 injection site in North Africa and one CO2 storage pilot project are being observed.

InfoTerra focuses on the production of surface displacement information from TerraSAR-X, TUV provides expertise on the regulatory requirements of licencing, and E.oN Gas Storage (EGS) focuses on end-user requirements and validation.
