Motorway Impact on Protected Sites in Poland

The “autostrada” A1 in Poland is a planned and under-construction motorway which will run from north to south through central Poland, from Gdansk on the Baltic Sea through Lódz and the Upper Silesian industry area (Gliwice) to the Czech border at Gorzyczki/Vernovice, where it will connect with the Czech motorway D1. The motorway A1 is a part of the European route E75 and as such lies on the priority TEN-T axis Project Number 25. The total length of the motorway is planned to be 568 km. The autostrada A4 runs from west to east through southern Poland, from the Polish-German border in Zgorzelec (connecting to the German A4), through Wroclaw, Katowice, Kraków, Tarnów and Rzeszów to the - Ukrainian border at Korczowa. The TEN-T motorway is a part of the European route E40. The EIB-financed project encompasses the construction on a new alignment of two sections (one section of the A1 and one of the A4) of dual two-lane motorway and associated access roads. The concerned motorway sections are known to cross or be in the vicinity of at least five Natura 2000 sites and there are potentially other protected areas that may be impacted. The Environmental Impact Assessment resulted in a number of mitigation measures to reduce the impact of the project (demolition of buildings, reforestation, building of bridges for animal crossing, etc.).
