Urban Development in Greece

Context

The EIB-funded project targets the urban redevelopment of the Eleonas district, located in the western suburbs of the city of Athens, only 3km from Omonia square and in the vicinity of the port of Piraeus. The area has lacked proper urban planning and is characterised by contradictory and inefficient uses of land, low population density mostly in temporary housing, a variety of semi-industrial activities, an inexistent local road network and environmental deterioration. The EIB operation will finance public investments, including the construction of 247000m2 of street surfaces (approximately 35km in length), the provision of street lighting, the electrical cable network and public green areas. A football stadium and a shopping mall are to be constructed in the area by private promoters.

EO Contribution

The purpose of the EOEuropa project is to assess urban changes in the Eleonas area over the last two decades, for the years 1995 (or 1994), 2000 (or 1999 or 2001), 2007 (or 2006) and 2011. Particular focus is on the progress of the implementation of construction works and fluctuation in temporary housing during the considered time period.
