Support to Pacific Regional Oceanscape Investment Program

Tuvalu is one of the four countries which will be included in Phase 1 of the Pacific Regional Oceanscape Investment Program (PROP). This program aims to improve the sustainable management and use of both oceanic and inshore fishery resources as well as support the conservation of coastal and oceanic waters. Satellite based mapping and monitoring will help assess the impacts of the pollution-control measures currently being considered by the Tuvalu Government. The project is mapping and monitoring the oceanographic conditions around the Funafuti lagoon as well as the lagoon conditions in order to make the link between deteriorating environmental conditions and anthropogenic and climatic impacts. The information provided includes: water transparency, concentration of suspended materials, temperature as well as past weather conditions like wind and waves, macro algae extent and land occupation and uses maps to estimate human-induced stresses on the lagoon health. Algae bloom maps will allow to assess the state of the Funafuti lagoon before and after the bloom, and understand its geographic repartition. Other data products will provide a very wider picture of Funafuti in order to understand a possible influence of larger features - climatic conditions at several thousand of kilometers - on local processes happening in the lagoon. This oceanographic and meteorological information will be provided at lower resolution as monthly and seasonal averages.
